Dear parents,

Grange Community College are currently organising their annual secondary school experience. This event is open for local fifth class pupils and pupils from Belmayne ETNS have been attending it for a number of years now.

The event gives the children a taste of what secondary school is like by mixing with different pupils from other primary schools and moving around the school through the day doing fun activities.

It has been a huge success in recent years and has greatly helped the pupils get ready for the transition to a new school the following year.

Date: 6th February 2018
Time: 8:45am - 2pm
Location: Grange Community College

Boxty Recipe

Boxty

Traditional Irish Potato dish from counties Cavan & Leitrim
Recipe by Helen Meaney.

Ingredients
1 kg potatoes
Flour (plain)
Salt

Method

Peel all the potatoes, grate half of each potato (to ensure you don’t grate your knuckles along with the end of each potato!! 😊) and put the other half of each potato into a pot to boil.

Cover the grated potatoes in water, to ensure they don’t discolour. When the boiled potatoes are soft, drain, and mash. Place into a large bowl.

Put the oven on to pre-heat (175° Celsius).

Drain the water from the grated potatoes as much as possible (I use a sieve for this), and then drain any residual liquid by placing the potatoes into a muslin or clean cloth and squeezing until the potato mixture is as dry as possible.

Add to the mashed potatoes, with enough flour to bind the mixture, and a good pinch of salt to season. Mix until everything is well incorporated.

Generously butter a baking dish, add the potato mixture, and pat down well. Spread a little butter over the top of the mixture and bake at 175° for approximately one hour.

Allow to cool, slice into wedges that are roughly thumb width, and fry either in butter or bacon fat.

Enjoy!

Upcoming Trips

This term we have been learning all about Islam in Learn Together. We are going to visit a mosque in Clonskeagh on Wednesday, November 29th. We hope to bring the children elsewhere after the mosque depending on the weather and traffic (e.g. a park, museum, etc.).

We are also hoping to bring the children to see the film 'Wonder' before we finish up for the Christmas holidays. (The children are reading the novel at the minute.) We are yet to confirm the exact date for this trip.

The total cost for the 2 Trips is €10. The school is covering all additional costs as we are conscious that the Christmas Holidays are approaching and that money can be tight at this time of the year.

Regards,

Kevin and Shane.

The Intel Mini Scientist competition.

Children will once again be entering the Intel Mini Scientist Competition.

Information on the competition can be found on http://www.miniscientist.ie/?page_id=541

Children will be working in groups.

Children can find helpful tips and resources on various topics/experiments on  http://www.education.com/science-fair/elementary-school/

Children should choose a topic area and begin some research and establish a suitable research question i.e. what they want to find out.

We kindly ask that you enable your child to work individually or collaboratively with their peers. Adults can guide, monitor and support their work where necessary.

I will post further updates here soon. Any questions or queries please do not hesitate to ask me.

Here is a list of some suitable websites to help with their research and brainstorming:
